“We spent a lot of time in advance of going into the studio attempting to come up with ideas for recording the track and found that nothing we thought of worked at all. Then on recording day we set up at Playing Aloud and spontaneously ran through the track, at which point it all came together. From there we found each part fitting naturally into place and feeling right by us and right by the original. The vocals were a particular challenge to do justice to since they were like nothing I’d ever sung before. As a band we found it quite hard to relate musically. I think there’s a pressure when covering a song by someone as legendary as Bowie to not just copy the song or to try and ‘improve’ on it since it’s already so well known. So, with It Ain’t Easy being a pretty straight forward two-and-a-half-minute track, something so different to what we do, we initially didn’t know what to do with it. In the end it wasn’t until we sat down and just played it together on the day of recording that we figured out what felt right for us and started to understand the vibe of the track and where we could fit in with that. Actually sitting down to listen to Ziggy Stardust for the first time was an absolute pleasure and certainly helped us to understand why Bowie has such a legendary reputation.”
